Climbing Mount Triglav (2864 m)

Triglav, with an elevation of 2,864 metres (9,395 ft), is the highest mountain in Slovenia and the highest peak of the Julian Alps. The mountain is the pre-eminent symbol of the Slovene Nation. It is the centrepiece of Triglav National Park, Slovenia's only national park. Triglav was also the highest peak in Yugoslavia before Slovenia's independence in 1991.

The Valley of the Triglav Seven Lakes Hiking

The Triglav Lakes Valley (Slovene: Dolina Triglavskih jezer) is a rocky hanging valley in the Julian Alps, below the sheer sides of Mount Tičarica and Mount Zelnarica southwest of Triglav. The valley is also called the Seven Lakes Valley (Dolina sedmerih jezer), although there are ten and not seven lakes in the valley. It is above the tree line and is geologically alpine karst; therefore it has also been termed the Sea of Stone Valley.

The lowest lake is the Black Lake (Črno jezero) at an elevation of 1,294 metres (4,245 ft) above sea level; it is above the rocky slope of the Komarča Crag. The Alpine newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris), endemic to the Alps, lives in it. Below Mount Tičarica (elevation 1,676 m (5,499 ft)) there are two interconnected lakes known as the Double Lake (Dvojno jezero). At an elevation of 1,838 m (6,030 ft) lies the Big Lake (Veliko jezero) or the Lake Ledvica (literally: Lake Kidney; Jezero v Ledvici). It has the shape of a kidney and is the largest and the deepest of these lakes. The highest is the Podstenje Lake (Jezero v Podstenju), which is located at an elevation of 1,993 m (6,539 ft).

The Seven Summits Ridge

The famous ridge separating Gorenjska (mountains) and Primorska (coastal & karst) region runs along the seven main summits of the southern part of the Julian Alps.

The panoramic hike along marked trails and the famous and internationally acclaimed Via Alpine Red R9 takes you through one of the oldest alpine botanical gardens in the world (see Botanical Garden Črna Prst below) and along multiple summits with low elevation gain. The main summits include: Črna Prst (1844 m), Matajurski vrh (1936 m), Veliki Raskovec (1967 m), Novi vrh (1942 m), Rodica (1963 m), Šija (1880 m), Vogel (1922 m).

Botanical Garden Črna Prst

Črna Prst mountain (1844 m) and its surroundings have had a botanical reputation for over 200 years. The credit goes mostly to Karel Zois and F. X. Wulfen, as well as to other researchers that followed later on. Even without this information, everyone who climbs Črna Prst in the early summer notices the rich diversity and beauty of the flora.

The name of our property actually derives from the Sunrose flower, which is typical flora of one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world.
